Emily Rose: Anneliese Michel, one of the most amazing paranormal cases of the 20th century occurred in the town of Klingenberg, Germany. The victim was a young woman named Anneliese Michel (1952-1976), who is said to have been possessed by six infernal entities.
When Anneliese Michel was sixteen years old, in 1969, she began to have some “fits” that were diagnosed as epilepsy. She was interned for a time in the Würzburg psychiatric hospital. Then went through a period of improvement, even graduating from the University of Würzburg in 1973.
Despite this improvement, Anneliese Michel got progressively worse. Her depression worsened, she lived frustrated because of the medical treatments she was undergoing. She became a devout Catholic as the symptoms of demonic possession became more and more evident. Soon developed a kind of “abhorrence” for sacred objects, such as crucifixes and holy water.
In June 1970 Anneliese Michel was admitted again, suffered terrible convulsions. Medicine did not help soften these “attacks” which became more and more ferocious. She began to speak of “evil faces” hovering over her in the darkness of her room.
Her psychiatrists, unable to help her , agreed that they would allow her to undergo a Catholic exorcism as long as she did not abandon her medical treatment, which tried to fight multiple diagnoses: schizophrenia and psychosis.
In 1973 Anneliese Michel’s parents officially requested an exorcism. The request was refused until it fell into the hands of the priest Ernst Alt, a respected exorcist who thought that the girl met the necessary conditions to be considered “possessed”.
The parish priest quickly obtained permission from the ecclesiastical authorities to perform the exorcism.
The ritual had several phases. Anneliese Michel was found to have been possessed by six different demons, calling themselves Lucifer, Cain, Judas, Nero, Belial, and Legion.
The exorcism went on for almost a year until Anneliese Michel died. She was just 23 years old.
Anneliese Michel’s autopsy revealed that her death was due to a fatal combination of malnutrition and dehydration. Her body showed signs of terrible violence, especially in the knees, since she suffered genuflexion attacks (kneeling), that is, she kneeled obsessively to ask for divine help.
The case of the exorcism of Anneliese Michel was picked up by the cinema on two occasions. The best known is the film: The Exorcism of Emily Rose (The Exorcism of Emily Rose, 2005), although there is also a German version of the story, called: Requiem: The Journey of Anneliese Michel (Requiem, 2006).
